Grade the plane
We set drainage, knock down birdbaths, and decide where rock, planting pockets, and hard edges meet before a single scoop hits the lot.

Edge and fabric
Steel, concrete, or paver edges. Fabric where it earns its keep, terminated cleanly so it does not crawl into the street.

Place the structure
Boulders, dry creeks, and planting pockets first. Rock is a composition, not a dump.

Finish the field
Screened rock or DG to spec, raked, compacted where needed, and left looking like someone meant it.

Phoenix xeriscape is a water strategy, not an aesthetic afterthought. A lawn that needs weekly irrigation on a west lot is a bill and a lecture from the city. Rock and desert plantings cut that load to drip zones. The catch: cheap white rock reflects like a mirror, pale DG washes into the gutter, and a fabric job without edges becomes a mess the first time a landscaper blows the lot.
We spec colors that still look like the Sonoran in August, not a parking-lot gray that heats the stem wall. We keep water in the planting wells and out of the rock field. And we do not pretend a two-inch dusting of gravel is a finished yard — depth and edge are what make it last.
Materials
What goes in the ground
Ground-plane materials are chosen for color-fastness, dust, and how they sit next to the house:
- Decomposed granite — stabilized on paths, loose in beds, color matched to the elevation
- Screened decorative rock in sizes that do not migrate into the street
- Boulders and specimen stone seated into grade, not perched on fabric
- Dry river beds and drainage swales that actually carry monsoon water
- Weed barrier detailed at edges, valves, and hardscape — or skipped where it does more harm than good
- Low-water planting pockets with drip from day one so the rock has something to frame
Questions
Is xeriscape just rock and a cactus?+
Not when we do it. Structure, color, and a ground plane with edges. Empty gray lots are a missed spec, not a style.
Will the rock wash into the street?+
Not if the grade, edge, and size are honest. We do not use pea gravel on a slope and hope. Stabilized DG on walks. Larger rock where water runs.
Can you redo a front yard that is already all rock?+
Yes. Most “rock yards” need regrade, new fabric or none, better boulder placement, and plantings that belong. We will tell you what to keep.
Do you do commercial parking islands and HOA common areas?+
Yes. Drought-tolerant, low-maintenance specs that still look owned. Ask about commercial landscape if the lot is bigger than a house.
